Construction, deconstruction, reconstruction. My paintings work their way through a” kid in a sand box” process. I begin with colors I love, building with layers of paint and the texture of collage. I add line to guide me, using Caran D’Ache, charcoal or graphite, and proceed by repainting. The end result is a mix of imagination, intuition and the sheer joy of the process.

I have always loved to create, first taking painting seriously while seeking my Master’s degree in Social Work and working in Charlottesville, VA. I stopped painting for a number of years to pursue my career, but frequently turned to my art background for help in my work with chronically ill children. Shortly after my daughters were born, I left my clinical practice to start a small decorative painting company where I worked for almost a decade painting walls, furniture and murals.

I began again to paint on canvas as a more independent means of expressing my ideas in 2001. My work is expressionistic and reflects my intense relationship with rural landscapes and creatures. Some of my most vivid visual memories relate to periods of my life when I lived on horse and cattle farms. The feeling of these places lives in my soul and the images come back to me at the most unexpected times. I am a cowgirl at heart.

Creating faux finishes sparked my interest in layering and glazing, and these methods have worked their way onto my canvases, creating a richer, more interesting surface. Using a bright color palette, my work is intentional, but not overly serious. I am open to accidents and often find my original abstract design leads me to something even more exciting.
